Perhaps you could try a free option here first, to trial your requirements. There are configurable filters available in software as well. I think sometimes, filters may be the only option. The latency of the MIDI filter was negligible. Some gear would not respond at all, and others would just have terrible timing. I had some legacy gear, which couldn't handle active sense, or NRPN, and choked on clock messages. I have made a MIDIBox filter previously, which worked very well for me. There are cases when it is better to make sure devices never receive any messages which they are not required to respond to.

Unfortunately, some devices are not really able to handle full MIDI bandwidth. Preventing a receiving device from responding to a type of message is OK, though the messages will still have to be parsed by the receiving device, in order to reject them. See if you can get this functionality from your existing gear. As mentioned, a lot of gear will allow you to select what is transmitted. This can really help with bandwidth limitations, and latency. In general, it is best to only send what your other gear needs to receive.
